The lengths we are prepared to go to in order to protect 'our right to drive' really is quite astonishing. This article from The New Statesman concludes, "If all plant life was seen as potentially convertible for transport fuel, there would be nothing to stop what was left of the planet's biosphere from being strip-mined to keep rich motorists on the road."
Driving less and cycling and walking more appears a slightly more sensible alternative to killing the planet.

Forum for the Future and UCAS asked some 5,000 university applicants from the UK and overseas what they think about the future.
Headlines include:
* more than 66% claim they would be happy without a car if public transport were good enough
* the most popular environmentally friendly actions are: walking and cycling instead of driving (65% do this and 14% plan to).

Telecommuting Reduces Mileage
Telecommuting (working from home) is carbon-friendly. The Department for Transport estimates that teleworkers working at home reduce their mileage between 48-77% on teleworking days and 11 to 19% overall. Source:

Apart From Chip Fat There Is No Such Thing As A Sustainable Biofuel
The Guardian features an interesting article by car free environmentalist columnist, George Monbiot. In it he discusses the consequences of peak oil, and points out how bio-fuels are less sustainable than petrol, concluding that behaviour change is the only practical solution.For further information see ACT Travelwise News.
